In the Golden Age of Piracy, sailors and privateers tested the strength of their spirits using gunpowder. If it was at least 57% ABV, (100 proof) the gunpowder would ignite, proving it hadn’t been watered down. This “proof” test ensured their ration was strong enough for the high seas.
